Advent 3

I tried to tell the Christmas story to my ESL class the other night. My starting point was the carol, Away in a Manger. I figured it would have fewer difficult words than other favorite carols: Hark the herald angels sing . . .mercy mild . . .reconciled . . .O come Immanuel. . . ransom captive Israel . .  I explained manger and hay and then found myself talking about a baby, God's son, placed in a feed box. A place that animals eat from. As a child I had thought that manger was another word for cradle—why else would you put a baby inside it?  Perhaps I should've stopped right there and asked someone in my class to retell the strange story so far.  Later in the evening each ESL class performed skits, and then we all feasted on ham and festive foods brought by teachers and students. As we began cleaning up I saw one of my students waiting by the door. She had told me she was leaving but then I saw her waiting so I asked her, "Do you need a ride home?" ...

Silly Putty?

My daughter has told me repeatedly over the last few weeks that she wants Silly Putty for Christmas.  That should be with a little trademark R next to it. But I cannot buy her Silly Putty.  The stretchy flesh colored stuff of our childhood for me holds a memory, laughable now, but still all to clear, though it is more than two years old. Waiting in line at the Celle train station, trying to figure out what kind of monthly pass I need in order to get Elisabeth to school every day.  Unable to speak in German, still jetlagged, wishing that I didn't have to be there by myself with the kids, angry with John for working and leaving this mess to me, angry that we had to be so far away from the school, drowning in my little sea of sorrows and self pity, adding an additional 100 Euro to the tally of wasted money spent out of ignorance on the wrong train pass . . .and the children are playing with Silly Putty.   Oh first it was good.  Indeed, it was gre...
